Android Cannot sign into Google Play

I cannot sign into Google play. I have been playing for a week and want to save my game. I follow the instructions from the wiki.

Start the google play app.
Start Clash Royal.
Go to settings and click Link Device button.
I see the green connect button. But when I press it I get the red 'lost connection' icon for a second and nothing happens. I don't get signed in.

I have tried deleting my google play service cache but that did not help.
