Android Upgrade differences? Please explain!

Sooooo I upgraded a card earlier and I was 6 over and they disappeared, I thought they would have counted towards my next upgrade, and just now I had 17 cards over on my goblins and upgraded anyways, since I was resigned to losing them, but they didn't disappear! They're counting towards my next upgrade and I'm VERY confused about why it worked now but not earlier? Can anyone explain? Or even noticed? THANKS! I have two more excess cards and can't decide if I should upgrade them and hope for the best or what I should do sooooo a quick response is greatly appreciated!
