First, just to clear that up, I have never changed the clock settings on my phone to open a chest early.
I have to say, game notifications are so bad and wrong that I'm amazed there aren't tons of bug reports on it (none in the first 5 pages).
I get delayed and just plain wrong notifications ALL THE TIME!
I'm not even talking about the "the arena waits for you" right after I closed the game after half an hour of play, but completely wrong chest and tournament notifications.

Some scenarios:

- I open a giant chest. 2 days later I get a notification "giant chest can be opened"
- I open a magical chest. A week later! I get the notification that I can open a magical chest
- I open a free chest, close the app. Seconds later "you can open a free chest"
- I open a chest, close the app. Minutes later I get "oops, you forgot to open a chest"

It goes on and on, golden and silver chest notifications are flying around at any time, regardless of what I'm actually opening and whether I can really open a chest.
It seems worst when I'm in the game during an event, e.g. when a free chest comes in while I'm in the game. When I open it, I'll surely get a notification for it when I close the game.
The only notification that seems to be okay is when the crown chest is available.
